America's racism extends to all aspects of society, and it is especially heartbreaking to see it in the medical field.
Black maternal mortality is a crisis all across America, but especially in NYC. Please consider giving to one of these organizations listed below to help combat this crisis if you can.
Babies need their Parents! Whether a Birthing Parent is suffering in childbirth because the hospital is underfunded, or because their care providers are racist and not treating the birthing person with enough care, all factors need to be addressed. Many public hospitals in low-income neighborhoods get less funding from the state than hospitals in affluent neighborhoods. Sometimes low income hospitals are also where the state does the most "research," using their patients as test subjects. Modern Western Obstetrics and Gynecology were developed by white male doctors experimenting on black women without any anesthesia and these roots are still haunting our field of work today.
All birthing people need to be safe, loved, and well cared for while giving birth to their babies. One of the best ways we can make change is by having more BIPOC Midwives who can care for the people birthing in their communities.
